Workwise my background is in occupational psychology, mostly teaching and consultancy. I worked for many years as an associate lecturer at the University of London, focusing on coaching, counselling, stress and well-being. But my interest in chronic pain stems from my personal life experience…
In my twenties I was diagnosed with a lifelong medical condition which requires ongoing management and results in chronic pain. I understand all too well how pain, stress and sleeplessness can become a vicious cycle, sapping your energy and zest for life. Several years on, juggling family life, sleepless nights and unreliable health was proving too much. After a particularly tough spell of illness, I had no choice but to resign from my role at the university and drop out of my PhD programme.
Fast forward to now… I may be older, I still have the same underlying condition… but I have a very different outlook. My background in psychology, and a return to study, helped me find a whole host of useful strategies for coping with chronic pain and stress – enabling me to get the most out of life once again.
The majority of these techniques come from the cognitive behavioural school of thought and are scientifically proven to be effective. When combined with hypnotherapy, an approach known as ‘Cognitive Behavioural Hypnotherapy’, the results are even more impressive.
